On 8th September 1934 with the support of a band of ardent helpers, Mr Shelton Leslie Schokman Snr. founded the Dematagoda Christian Guild. It was born of his Christian vision to help the aged, the poor, the disabled and the destitute.
This enthusiastic group of members worked fervently , ministering to the poor and underprivileged. Living up the motto of the guild "By love serve one another".
In 1950 the Dematagoda Christian Guild Recreation Club was formed to provide teachings, sports and recreation to young and old alike.
In 1972 Mr Schokman handed over the Dematagoda Christian Guild to the Salvation Army before migrating to Australia with his family. He dreamed of setting up a similar guild in Australia. This dream was fulfilled on 4th December 1976; when his son Charles chaired the inaugural meeting of the ASWG.
The country, the conditions and the rules were different but the motto remained unchanged "By love serve one another". Over time the membership grew, the branches of service spread in all directions, giving those in need, unselfishly of their time and talent.
